Meryl Rachlin

Meryl Rachlin has been an artist ever since she could draw a simple figure as a child. Her dad, an artist, recognized her talents and fostered her creative learning throughout her schooling. She attended Mass College of Art, majoring in graphic design. Meryl then went on to work on some of the very first computer graphic systems for Time Inc., utilizing her artistic skills within the confines of what was then cutting-edge technology. From there Meryl escaped the corporate world for world travel. After painting a mural in New Zealand and nine months of travel, she returned home to Boston and studied decorative painting and began her business, Meryl’s Murals, in 1995. Meryl and her husband, Bill, moved to Celebration in 2005 where she continued to paint murals in the Orlando area until 2018. Meryl has curated and taught over a dozen art classes for Lifelong, often learning new mediums to pass forward to Lifelong Learning students. Meryl draws portraits of people and animals on commission along with her original 3D dog portraits that can be seen at Wolfgang’s. Meryl has been on the steering committee, now the board, of Lifelong, since the start of the program.

    Course description

    I am excited to introduce this new class utilizing botanicals. Using live, pressed dry, and even artificial flowers, we will create several different types of artistic results. We will experiment with light-sensitive mono printing. We will print directly from plant material. We will hammer flowers and greens and transfer their pigments to cards. We will place and glue pressed flowers creating framed art or cards. As I write this class description, I am still discovering all that we might be able to do with flowers to create new forms of art. I know one thing; this will be a really fun class! Sign up quickly before seats run out! This course has a materials fee. Note: This course begins at 10:00am.

    Course description

    This is not a beginner drawing course! This course is for anyone who has already taken beginning drawing or has some basic knowledge in drawing objects accurately already. We will continue our learning by first reviewing shading. Where is the light source coming from? Is your object flat-surfaced or curved? How do we draw objects casting shadows? We will next try our hand at drawing various textures, such as wood grain, shiny, clear, bumpy…You will need a pad (minimum size 9x12”) of sketch/drawing paper, a range of pencils from blacks to hards, a kneaded eraser, pencil sharpener, and a drawing board. Note: This course begins at 10:00 am.

    Course description

    This course is for anyone who wishes to enhance their drawings by understanding basic perspective. It is important when creating accurate drawings of objects, architecture, landscapes, and, well, pretty much everything! This course will give budding artists (or just those who wish to learn) an understanding of one- and two-point perspective through exercises we will do together in each class. You will need 9x12” (or larger) lightweight paper. If you choose to get a pad of graph paper, that will work as well. (Nothing expensive is required.) Pencils, a clear ruler or clear triangle, a pencil sharpener, and an eraser will be needed. If you have a drawing board from a previous class, feel free to bring that as well. Note: This course begins at 10:00 am.
